Scribbling thin scratchy lines are wonderful. I can hear the sounds even on the iPhone.

Actually that’s the thing I really miss on the iPhone. The texture of the paper and the sound of a drawing implement being drawn across a surface. Here’s another from the series of tools and palette I made.

Sweet.

I have the most awesome coffee kit at my studio. A wonderful Cusinart drip pot and grinder. That means making the coffee for when I’m there is as much a pleasure as drinking it.

I captured this shot with my first cup before settling down to do some musing in my studio journal – the private one.

Oh the aroma.

Another drawing where I’ve used a color background. Floating marks. A dancing cosmos. I made another set of tools. I’m starting to get some new kind of layering here. Also understanding how to create some additional softness.

The project continues to be interesting each day. Something new happens. Some new investigation. One of the biggest advantages to step outside of some of the work I’ve been doing on paper in the studio is that I can’t be precise in this iPhone form. My finger is too big, the proximity of my finger and where the mark appears are not so easy to gauge, the space in which I’m drawing is so small.

In the afternoon—in my studio.

Just taking my lunch out of the microwave and looking toward the future.

Spent a great day in my studio this week. I haven’t  had as many hours as as usual but I’ve had some very productive time. I’ve finished a series of eight drawings. Each drawing has an indigo field in the center. Only three components: indigo matte field, graphite grid, and white ink.

Everything in the studio recently has been about less. Sitting quietly. Then slowly and deliberately preparing the sheets of paper to begin drawing. I look forward and make marks slowly and methodically concentrating and each mark. Each of the recent eight drawings took four + hours.

Working with the same palette and tools. Think I may try another.
This is feeling flighty.

Back to another kind of thinking.

Working with the same palette that I used in my winter twins series that I completed last year around this time.  The recent snow brought me back to my minimalist tendencies. It’s wonderful to think about all that stuff just under the surface that a crust of translucent frozen snow obscures. Some little bits break the surface and indicate their full form.

Getting the drawings up on the blog is sometimes the most difficult part of the project.

I feel as though I should say something about the process each time. Something discovered. Some difficulty. Some revelation.

It’s not always that easy to verbalize what happened when I made the drawing. I have to look at it for a couple days and ask myself questions. Today that question is : How will what I just learned making this drawing make it’s way into my analog drawings?
One of the things I have been appreciating is levels of transparency in the marks I am making. How do I want to use that in the studio?

I also decided to add a smaller image in the post so you can see it in better resolution. We’ll see how that works ongoing. I’ll probably update the previous posts before I have too many to update.

I guess the last few days have built up to a more is more drawing.

I enjoyed making the many layers of this image. Using more of the technique that i use in my non digital drawings — many layers using each to obliterate or obscure the layer below. Letting marks peek out between the spaces.

Another set of brushes and a refinement of the color palette.

I used some new patterns to create a new marks from familiar gestures.

I found these marks to be different than I had anticipated. They created different patterns with each small change. This was really good fun and didn’t happen quite as fast as the final drawing appears.

Testing variations on my new brushes.

Pretty crazy some of these marks. Still loving every minute of doing a drawing a day.

Using some of the same marks that I have added to my toolkit.

I’ve also started creating my own color palette. Moving beyond the default swatches. Moving to a set of colors that I can use for a whole series of images before needing to change.
